PHRASAL VERB #3: BACK

Setelah kita membahas phrasal verb dalam bahasa Inggris dengan kata kerja dasar ‘ACT’ pada artikel sebelumnya, kali ini kita akan membahas phrasal verb dengan kata kerja dasar: BACK.

1.    Back away (from)

–       To move backwards and away from something, especially because you are frightened (Longman Dictionary).

Contoh: He backed away from that lion (Dia bergerak mundur menjauh dari singa itu)

–       To stop supporting a plan or idea, or stop being involved in something (Longman Dictionary).

Contoh: The government backed away from the new proposed program (Pemerintah mundur dari program yang baru diajukan).

2.    Back down

To admit that you are wrong or that you have lost an argument (Longman Dictionary).

Contoh: Both parties are not willing to back down.  (Kedua pihak tidak bersedia untuk mengalah).

3.    Back off

–       To move backwards, away from someone or something (Longman Dictionary).

Contoh: The thief backed off when he saw the police officer (Pencuri itu mundur ketika dia melihat petugas polisi)

–       To stop telling someone what to do, or stop criticizing them, especially so that they can deal with something themselves (Longman Dictionary).

Contoh: Back off, Marc! Let me run my own life! (Sudahlah Marc! Biarkan aku urus hidupku sendiri!)

4.    Back out (of)

–       To decide not to do something that you had promised to do (Longman Dictionary).

Contoh: We are hoping that no one will back out of the deal. (Macmillan Dictionary) – Kami berharap tidak seorangpun akan mundur dari kesepakatan.
